After they came back from lunch it was time to race for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Garrett's car was doing ok when all of a sudden we realized his car was actually running for 3rd place. Holy crow!! He didn't win it, but wow what an awesome thing for Garrett!!
This morning is the Awana Grand Prix. We arrived at 9:45 and they brought Garrett over his car. First stop was to register and then get his car weighed and add any weights to it that is needed. Then we went over and they took Garrett's car to get a picture and he got his participation ribbon. Then they took his picture for his drivers license!! We then went over and sat in the parent section and I took a picture of him and Tim together!! Thankfully Tim had today off to be able to watch him. Wow, is he looking more and more like his Dad!! Time for him to head over and sit in the kids section. He had lots of kids over there that he knew from Homeschooling and Awana!! At one point they were even doing Simon Says with them :) I love these pictures our friend Jamie Wero caught of Garrett!! Took some pictures of the other cars that would be racing as well!! Then they gave out awards. First award was to the best painted cars. They had a 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th place winners. Here are the kids that won those. Then they announced that this year was the first year they were giving out the Chuck Nixon award. Apparently in all of the years past he would be the one to cut the cars and would talk about the cars that were the most difficult to cut or had the best design. He passed away in October and to honor him they were going to be giving out an award for most difficult/best design cut car. I thought to myself Oh how cool is that. Well next thing I know they are announcing Garrett's name and for him to come up and get his award. Wow!! Great job Tim and Garrett for choosing such a cool car!! Now the fun starts.....the racing!! The instructors are advising all the kids when it's their turn or when they are on deck so they know to get ready to race. They also show them up on the big screen like this. Then you take your car up and hand it to the teenager putting them on the track. The pre-teens/teens are on one side and Awana kids are on the other side. They probably ran their cars at least 10 times on this track. Garrett was loving it!! After you race your information of who was the fastest is also put up on the screen. Garrett won his heat a couple of times!! We didn't realize it but you are supposed to place your weights in the middle or back of the car. We placed Garrett's weights at the front....oops!! O well :) Because the racing took so long the church provided Pizza and drinks for everyone. This way everyone could take a break from racing as well. After they came back from lunch it was time to race for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Garrett's car was doing ok when all of a sudden we realized his car was actually running for 3rd place. Holy crow!! He didn't win it, but wow what an awesome thing for Garrett!! At this point Garrett's racing was done and you could either stay or leave. We had the dog in the car so we decided to get going and take her to the dog park. Garrett and Sassy were having a great time. Garrett posing for pictures with his car!! See that picnic table above he is sitting on? To the right of that picnic table is a great big boulder. Well Garrett jumped off the picnic table went a little too far and smacked his head right on that boulder. It was like watching it in slow motion knowing there was nothing you could do about it and knowing it was probably going to turn out badly......He hit his head pretty hard, looked up and I saw the blood. I immediately went to him, placed my hand on his head where he was bleeding and called Tim over. Garrett of course was freaking out because, well.....blood!! Plus I'm sure it hurt pretty good. Tim got some water and we put some water on it and some paper towels to stop the bleeding. Poor little guy!! Looks like he got a good puncture wound out of it. Ouch!! We got home, cleaned it up, put some ointment and a bandage on it, gave him some Tylenol and told him he needed to rest for the rest of the night. He was a happy boy later on that night when his Dad put a Mickey bandage on for him and I was wearing the bear mask :) All in all not too bad of a day. Here is his trophy, car and drivers license he got from the Grand Prix Race Day!!
