In case you are wondering it gets cold here in the mountains, even in June. Last night the lows were in the 30's. So you can tell we are all bundled up in our sleeping bags. Even the dog had to get covered up, LOL!!
Tims head is barely sticking out and underneath that green blanket at the bottom is Sassy, LOL.
Garrett is in there somewhere....
It may be cold at night, but once the sun comes out it sure starts to warm up!! Sassy and Garrett enjoying some outside time.
Tim searching for where to eat breakfast.
Garrett had me put his little tent over his bed.
The 2 besties guarding our fort!!
Garrett took my phone and started taking selfies :)
Happy kids!! Getting ready to go out exploring. We purchased a back area book for Durango and will be using that to go exploring with. So much fun!!
Awe.....Sassy is hugging Chloe
We made it to Silverton and got on the back roads. Oh man, so much beauty in this area. I'm just going to let the pictures tell the story!! The road we took was called the Alpine Loop.
See those downed logs. Those are caused by the avalanches they have here. Apparently it is very common and we saw a lot of it on our drive.
If you have to use the toilet, at least you have a great view :)
I don't think we ever figured out what this was in the mountain.
Here we go.......
Cave in the side of the mountain.
Look at how much snow is still left.
Eureka Lodge B&B.
They probably use this to clear the roads in the winter.
Its so bright, she just needs to wear shades.....poor dog!!
God sure knows how to paint a portrait :)
This is a 1 lane road so when other cars come you have to get really far over. Vehicles have actually fallen off the side because they were too far over. Definitely some white knuckle moments.....
Our first animal. A Marmot. He was so cute!!
Yikes!! That bridge is definitely out of commission.....
All of these downed logs were from an avalanche they had from the winter. They just got the road cleared a couple weeks earlier.
He really enjoys taking pictures. So much beauty to be seen and captured today!!
We stopped at Animas Forks. It is a very cool old mining ghost town. Such beautiful views and we really enjoyed exploring this old settlement of the late 1800's. Sure must have been tough back in the day to keep food on the table. Not to mention surviving the brutal winters they must have had in this desolate area.
The elevation was over 11,000 feet. You definitely couldn't have had a better view though!!
Even in June it was cold!!
Tim and Garrett heading up to one of the homes. The historical society preserves them. It was neat to see how well they have held up over the seasons. I'm sure it gets extreme up here in the winter.
I can just imagine a child Garretts age back in the day sitting just like this on the porch playing.
What a view they had!!
Garrett was having a great time exploring!
Possible indoor plumbing?
Taking my hand to help me down. He sure is such a great helper!!
Strolling to the next location.
I'm still in awe of how well preserved these homes were. This historical society has done a great job!!
He's the king of the world!!
Here comes Tim and Teresa.
Garrett, future building inspector, LOL!!
Unfortunately not everything lasted :(
VIsiting the jail house.
Oh no....poor Teresa and Garrett
Even prisoners get tired.
Happy family :)
Spoke too soon, LOL!! Disturbing how much Garrett is laughing here ;)
Always in trouble, LOL!
Look at how thick that jail door was!!
Time to head back now. We are going back the same direction we came in on.
Wonder if this is an Eagles nest??
Teresa was enjoying herself and taking lots of pictures!!
Look at how much snow is still packed in there with the trees. Yikes!!
Holy Batman!! Makes you wonder how powerful an avalanche really is that can take these trees and make them look like it was nothing to pull them down.
Wonder if this is the same Marmot we saw coming in?
Hmmm I wonder what is in there???
We didn't see a whole lot of wildlife. Was really hoping we would see more. We did get to enjoy these ducks for a little bit and they gave us quite the show :)
We then headed back, ate dinner and hit the sack. Unfortunately right now there are no fires allowed. So we decided the best thing to do was to go to bed and get a good nights rest!! Today was such an amazing day, can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring ;)
