Some of you are aware that Garrett has a Speech Delay. We've had him in some sort of Speech Therapy since he's been two. While we've been here we found an excellent Speech Therapist Alyson Springer with Yakety Yaks. Every week she comes to us for a 45 minute session with Garrett. He loves her!! His speech has improved so much since she started working with him and we are definitely going to miss her!!
We are unsure of why Garrett is slow to speech as he is fine in every other aspect of his growth. We feel that he's the type of kid that will master it when he is ready so we will continue to work with him and get him the help that he needs until he does. Tim and I both can see a definite improvement in the last couple of months. Most of what I have read says that children like Garrett that are fine with everything else will catch up to his peers by the time he is 5 years old. It does still stress us out, especially to see other children his age talking and carrying on. We just take it one day at a time and do the best we can as his parents.
Some studies say that speech disorder is a genetic thing. That someone in their family has previously had a speech disorder. We are unaware of anyone in our immediate family that has this, so if any of my Aunts/Uncles/Cousins know of anyone that does please let me know. We can't ask our grandparents because they are no longer with us.
On Alyson's final evaluation of Garrett she had two conclusions that he could have. One is that he has a Phonological Disorder and the other is Childhood Apraxia of Speech. He exhibited more signs towards the Phonological disorder but he did have some of the apraxia as well. So now we will just continue on with the speech therapy and hope and pray that being around other kids this Summer will greatly improve his speech as well.
